About this role

Working in collaboration with Neuro-intensivists, critical care Fellows, and Residents, the Neurocritical Care Nurse Practitioner provides high quality patient care for neurology and neurosurgery patients in the Brigham and Women’s Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. The NP is a member of the multidisciplinary provider team with patient care and management responsibilities similar to interns and junior residents on rotation.

Elicits a detailed and accurate history, performs an appropriate physical examination, and presents pertinent data to the neurocritical care team. Attends, presents, and actively participates in daily ICU rounds while assisting with procedures and pre- and postoperative care. Performs and prescribes routine laboratory studies, medications, and consultations standard for the Neuroscience ICU Service.

Enters and signs admission, transfer, discharge, and preoperative orders into Order Entry. Assists in facilitating patient movement through the hospital, particularly admissions and discharges. Collaborates with physicians, fellows, residents, and multidisciplinary team in the Neuroscience ICU environment.

Serves as a mentor to APP staff, residents, students, and house staff while expanding own knowledge base. Participates in quality improvement initiatives, research projects, and ongoing education sessions to maintain evidence-based practices. Continues to provide the highest standard of patient care while improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Advanced practice registered nurse with specialized knowledge and skills through completion of a nurse practitioner program
  • APRN national certification required
  • ANA or other appropriate nursing certification in the area of practice
  • Authorization by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing to practice in the expanded role
  • DEA for prescription writing
  • Credentials to function in an expanded nursing role for daily management of selected patients
  • Responsibility for assessment and management of patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions

Responsibilities
