About this role

Working within the Emergency team and the Mental Health Reassessment and Observation Unit, the Psychiatric Liaison Nurse provides mental health expertise in patient assessment, suicide risk assessment, care planning, intervention and evaluation. This role operates within the Emergency Department, the Mental Health Observation Unit, and the Facility.

The nurse provides support and mental healthcare to Emergency Department patients and families experiencing stress or crisis. They also offer consultation and support to patients primarily assigned to an ED nurse. This involves crisis intervention and therapeutic communication within a biopsychosocial framework.

Working within the Emergency team, the Psychiatric Liaison Nurse collaborates with the Mental Health Reassessment and Observation Unit. This role is integral to the Adult Psych Emergency Nurses department at Health Sciences Centre. The position requires demonstrated competence in psychiatric assessment and awareness of community resources.

Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization delivers province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative functions for Manitoba health organizations. This role contributes to that mission by providing specialized mental health expertise in an acute care setting.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years recent acute mental health experience required.
  • Previous experience in an Emergency Department preferred.
  • Demonstrated competence in psychiatric assessment within a biopsychosocial framework.
  • Demonstrated competence in crisis intervention and therapeutic communication.
  • Demonstrated competence in managing co-occurring disorders.
  • Awareness of community resources available to clients with psychosocial, psychiatric, and chemical dependency needs.
  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing required.
  • BScMH, BScPN or BN preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mental health expertise in patient assessment, suicide risk assessment, care planning, intervention, and evaluation within the Emergency Department and Mental Health Observation Unit.
  • Deliver support and mental healthcare to Emergency Department patients and families experiencing stress or crisis.
  • Offer consultation and support to patients primarily assigned to an ED nurse.
  • Work collaboratively within the Emergency team and the Mental Health Reassessment and Observation Unit.
  • Conduct psychiatric assessments using a biopsychosocial framework.
  • Provide crisis intervention and therapeutic communication to patients with co-occurring disorders.
  • Liaise with community resources to address psychosocial, psychiatric, and chemical dependency needs.
