About this role

The Registered Nurse at Brigham and Women's Hospital Thoracic ICU is responsible and accountable for planning and providing patient care for assigned patients in accordance with Nursing Standards of Care. This role requires demonstrating initiative, knowledge, and clinical skills in caring for patients with complex needs. The nurse assumes full responsibility for assessment, plan, implementation, and evaluation of patient care under a designated nurse manager.

Daily duties include organizing patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating plans for specific assignments, setting priorities for varying acuity levels, and maintaining continuity through clear communication. Nurses document care comprehensively, develop educational and discharge plans, and evaluate effectiveness while revising as needed. They ensure a safe environment, administer medications safely, and perform procedures efficiently using equipment properly.

In this collaborative environment, the nurse interacts professionally with patients, families, and colleagues, collaborating across disciplines and upholding the A.N.A. code of ethics as a role model. Participation in unit-based quality improvement programs and goal-setting for the unit is essential. Requirements

  • Registered professional nurse in Massachusetts
  • Demonstrates initiative, knowledge and clinical skills in caring for the patient with complex needs
  • Ability to effectively manage patients by assuming full responsibility for assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of patient care
  • Appropriate knowledge of growth and development of the adult and geriatric patient
  • Demonstrates awareness of potential/actual risks of infection and modes of transmission
  • Utilizes universal precautions in nursing practice
  • Interacts with patients, families, and colleagues in a professional manner
  • Upholds the A.N.A. code of ethics and acts as a role model

Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate a plan of care for a specific patient assignment
  • Set priorities when organizing care for patients with varying acuity
  • Document patient care in a manner that is clear, complete, concise and in compliance with nursing documentation standards
  • Develop a comprehensive educational plan for the patient and family utilizing appropriate resources
  • Administer medication safely according to established policies and procedures
  • Perform nursing procedures safely and efficiently
  • Collaborate with other discipline(s)
  • Participate actively in unit-based and organizational quality management programs
