About this role

The Division of Family and Child Health of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene creates programs, policies, and services supporting physical and socio-emotional health for NYC families and children. The Supervising Public Health Nurse in the Bureau of School Health plays a key role in school health oversight. We encourage applicants committed to social justice, racial, gender, and LGBTQ equity.

Duties include providing nursing preceptor support for newly hired nurses, public health advisers, and assistants, while participating in the interviewing process for new hires. Supervise public health advisers and assist staff in applying nursing and administrative procedures with individual guidance. Conduct site visits to schools for clinical supervision of nurses, advisors, and assistants.

Serve as a training resource for nurses, school health staff, and Department of Education staff, conducting meetings and in-service training programs. Complete designated special projects to improve efficiency of health services. Contribute directly to a healthier, safer school environment for all students.

Requirements

  • Permanent Public Health Nurse
  • Expertise in Planning and Program Development
  • Analytical skills
  • Knowledge of DOHMH and DOE personnel policies and procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Excel

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing preceptor for newly hired Nurses, Public Health Advisers and Public Health Assistants
  • Participate in the interviewing process for new hires
  • Supervise Public Health Advisers
  • Assist staff in the application of nursing and administrative procedures, provide individual guidance and support, observe and review activities
  • Serve as training resource for nurses, other School Health Staff and school-based Department of Education staff
  • Conduct meetings, in-service training programs and complete designated special projects
