Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience. This fully remote Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner position provides real-time behavioral health assessment support for Critical Access Hospitals and emergency departments. Coverage focuses on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The role includes virtual rounding on behavioral health inpatient units and consultations for medical floors. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners perform thorough psychiatric evaluations, diagnose mental health conditions, and manage treatment plans including medication and psychotherapy. Collaboration occurs with psychiatrists and interdisciplinary teams for comprehensive care.

Work in collaboration with a virtual Psychiatrist ensures behavioral health coverage during specified hours. Schedule flexibility features rotating every other weekend with another Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Opportunities exist to assist with weekday open shifts as needed.

Engage in crisis intervention, quality improvement, and continuing education. Document assessments, treatment plans, and progress notes accurately. Coordinate care with therapists, primary care providers, and community resources to support patients of all ages.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Experience in psychiatric or mental health settings preferred
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice
  • State Controlled Substance License (if required by State)
  • National board certification as a Psych Mental Health (PMHNP-BC) or (PMHNP-C)
  • Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, including mental status exams and psychosocial assessments
  • Diagnose and treat mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, and substance use disorders
  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, monitoring for efficacy and side effects
  • Provide individual, group, or family psychotherapy as appropriate
  • Develop and update individualized treatment plans in collaboration with patients and families
  • Coordinate care with psychiatrists, therapists, primary care providers, and community resources
  • Participate in crisis intervention and emergency psychiatric care as needed
  • Provide real-time behavioral health assessment support for emergency departments and virtual rounding on inpatient units
