About this role
Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The Psychiatric Emergency Nurse works within the Emergency team and the Mental Health Observation Unit. This role provides mental health expertise in patient assessment, care planning, intervention and evaluation.
The Psychiatric Emergency Nurse delivers support and mental healthcare to emergency patients and families experiencing stress or crisis. Duties occur within the Emergency Department, Mental Health Observation Unit and the Facility. The nurse offers consultation and support to patients primarily assigned to an Emergency nurse.
This position integrates with the broader emergency and mental health teams at Health Sciences Centre. It focuses on child and adolescent psychiatric emergencies in a dynamic clinical environment. Collaboration enhances care delivery across units.
Nurses in eligible classifications may earn Pensionable Salary Enhancement of an additional $5.95/hour when working full-time hours within a prescribed six-month period. Effective April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2027. Union support through MNU provides additional professional backing.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years recent acute mental health experience required
- Child and Adolescent Mental Health experience
- Previous experience in an Emergency Department preferred
- Demonstrated competence in psychiatric assessment within a biopsychosocial framework
- Crisis intervention, therapeutic communication, co-occurring disorders
- Awareness of community resources available to clients with psychosocial, psychiatric and chemical dependency needs
- Graduate of an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing required
- Registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM) required
Responsibilities
- Provide mental health expertise in patient assessment, care planning, intervention and evaluation within the Emergency Department
- Deliver support and mental healthcare to emergency patients and families experiencing stress or crisis
- Offer consultation and support to patients primarily assigned to an Emergency nurse
- Conduct psychiatric assessments within a biopsychosocial framework
- Perform crisis intervention for child and adolescent mental health emergencies
- Apply therapeutic communication in acute psychiatric settings
- Address co-occurring disorders in emergency psychiatric care
- Utilize awareness of community resources for psychosocial, psychiatric and chemical dependency needs
