About this role
The Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner is responsible for practicing orthopaedic medicine with or without physician medical supervision. This role demands two years of surgical orthopaedic experience. Practitioners handle comprehensive patient assessments and treatment within their scope of practice.
Day-to-day duties include performing history and physical exams, interpreting laboratory and diagnostic procedures to formulate diagnoses, and implementing therapeutic interventions. They order studies like EMG, X-rays, CT, MRI, and perform procedures such as joint aspirations, fracture reductions, injections, casting, and minor surgeries.
In the team environment, collaborate with supervising orthopaedic surgeons, conduct hospital rounds, write orders, take call, and assist in surgery including first assist and tissue closures. Maintain effective relationships with patients, providers, co-workers, and promote patient advocacy while complying with confidentiality, OSHA, and HIPAA.
Opportunities involve designing research studies, managing databases, performing quality assurance, participating in peer reviews, staff education, and clinical guideline development. Provide monitoring and continuity of care, counsel on health maintenance, and act as consultant on orthopaedic specialty.
Requirements
- Two years of surgical orthopaedic experience
- Current and up-to-date licensures
- Ability to exercise judgment on problems requiring consultation or referral to supervising orthopaedic surgeon
- Proficiency in performing orthopaedic procedures including wound management, tendon repair, and hardware removal
- Experience interpreting orthopaedic diagnostic studies such as compartment pressure measurements and bone scans
- Capability to prescribe and administer nonscheduled legend drugs and medical devices as delegated
- Compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, safety guidelines, and confidentiality requirements
Responsibilities

- Perform procedures such as digital blocks, joint aspirations, fracture reductions, injections, casting, and splinting
- Assist in surgery including first assist, tissue closures, and application of appliances
- Conduct hospital rounds, write orders, take call, and dictate discharge summaries
- Order, prescribe, and administer medications, orthotics, braces, and orthopaedic devices
