Alfred Psychiatry leads in acute and community psychiatric care with a State-wide Psychiatric ICU. The Nursing Workforce Department supplies supplementary staff to Alfred, Caulfield, and Sandringham sites.
Motivated psychiatric registered nurses join the Nurse Bank for casual work across bed-based services, including the Acute In-Patient Psychiatric Unit at The Alfred Hospital and Residential Rehabilitation in St Kilda. Nurses may also support medical and surgical wards. Flexibility for shifts in different settings is highly valued.
This direct patient care role involves risk assessment, mental state assessment, and care planning. Duties include consultation, liaison, and negotiation with patients, carers, family members, and professionals. The goal is to facilitate clinical recovery and minimize service barriers.
The team recruits casual and permanent Bank staff for advanced and short-notice bookings. Close collaboration occurs with departments using General, Theatre, Psychiatric, and Enrolled nurses. Education and training support staff development to strive and thrive.
Excellent professional development opportunities are available. Strategies maximize retention of Bank staff. Orientation and ongoing educational programs are developed and monitored.
Requirements
- Registered Psychiatric Nurse Grade 2 Classification (NP11-NP70)
- Unrestricted registration
- Motivated to work in psychiatric nursing
- Flexibility and availability for shifts across different settings
- Ability to work in acute in-patient psychiatric unit and residential rehabilitation
- Experience providing psychiatric care in medical and surgical wards
Responsibilities
- Work across bed-based services including acute psychiatric unit at Alfred site
- Provide care in Residential Rehabilitation Community Care Unit in St Kilda
- Support psychiatric needs of patients in medical and surgical wards on casual basis
- Conduct risk assessment, mental state assessment, and care planning
- Consult, liaise, and negotiate with patients, carers, family members, and professionals
- Facilitate clinical recovery and support individual recovery efforts
- Provide supplementary staffing for increased demand or shortfalls via just-in-time bookings
