About this role

Buncombe County Health and Human Services is looking for a Public Health Nurse II who wants more than a traditional clinic role. The ideal candidate would be energized by both clinical work and spending time in community outreach.

This PHN II will provide direct Public Health nursing services in our clinics in addition to community outreach activities with the Mobile Team. They will work in the Immunization, Family Planning, and STI Clinics and also provide clinical services and public health education at outreach sites across the county.

The Mobile Team has a 25-foot vehicle which brings mobile services to the community. Candidates should be comfortable working in a clinic and environments other than medical offices, with occasional evening or weekend work required based on outreach schedules or emergency response.

This is a grant-funded position with a current end date of June 30, 2027, but the department is working to extend it. The position receives the County's full benefits package including an 8% County contribution to employee 401(k) and free physical therapy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation and one year of Public Health Nursing experience, OR graduation from a school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience including one year of Public Health Nursing experience, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Valid driver's license (no RV/bus driving experience required; training provided).
  • Must present diploma, degree, or transcript to supervisor/department upon hire per NC Local Health Department Accreditation requirements.
  • English/Spanish bilingual speakers preferred.
  • Certification in Community Health Nursing preferred.
  • Comfortable working in a clinic and environments other than medical offices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct Public Health nursing services in the Immunization, Family Planning, and STI Clinics.
  • Conduct community outreach activities with the Mobile Team, including providing clinical services and public health education at outreach sites such as community markets, public housing, churches, libraries, and outdoor events.
  • Develop community relationships through outreach and engagement across the county.
  • Drive the mobile vehicle up to four times per month on a rotating basis (training provided).
  • Provide professional nursing services related to public health and community health care in health promotion, prevention, and disease control programs.
  • Work in both clinic and non-medical office environments, adapting to varied outreach settings.
  • Support emergency response efforts when needed, including occasional evening or weekend shifts.
