About this role
This role is responsible for carrying out communicable disease surveillance, prevention, and control measures for the City of Boston. The nurse investigates reports of communicable diseases including pathogens of public health importance and emerging pathogen events.
Day-to-day activities include field investigations such as home and site visits, implementing preventive and control measures, and providing nursing services at the BMC TB Clinic. This involves patient assessment, education, medication monitoring, and tuberculin skin testing.
The nurse works collaboratively within the CDC Division to ensure public health preparedness, assist with mass casualty surveillance, and support vaccine clinics and other projects. Acts as a resource for education and outreach to community agencies, healthcare facilities, and stakeholders.
Opportunities include participating in staff conferences, community committees, research activities, quality improvement initiatives, and program planning. This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending remote work with on-site responsibilities in Boston.
Requirements
- Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
- BSN or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with minimum of two years of clinical or public health experience (or 8 years of experience as substitute)
- Master's in Public Health may substitute for one year of experience
- Prior experience working with infectious diseases preferred
- Demonstrated competency in working with diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic groups
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to carry out responsibilities in home, community, and group settings
- Current Massachusetts driver's license and own vehicle
Responsibilities
- Carry out communicable disease surveillance, prevention, and control measures for the City of Boston

- Conduct field investigations including home and site visits to implement preventive and control measures
- Provide nursing services at the BMC TB Clinic including patient assessment, education, medication monitoring, and tuberculin skin testing
- Assist with surveillance and control activities for mass casualty events
- Collect epidemiologic data for analysis of communicable diseases within Boston
- Provide nursing support for CDC Division including vaccine clinics and other projects or activities as needed
- Act as a resource for education and outreach to community-based agencies, health care facilities, and stakeholders regarding infectious diseases
