This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by being a competent, respectful, and compassionate professional. The Registered Staff Nurse is able to safely, accurately, and independently follow Mercy's standards and policies while caring for patients.
Day-to-day responsibilities include ensuring accurate and clinically relevant communication at hand offs and other times, demonstrating competent assessment, planning, intervention, coordination, and evaluation skills based on the individual patient plan of care. The nurse continually assesses patient and family needs to provide quality care and maintains real-time documentation of nursing care provided.
Working within the Behavioral Health unit, the nurse assesses and reassesses suicide risk per policy and adapts the plan of care with appropriate interventions. They de-escalate patients in crisis to prevent acts of aggression, and direct other licensed and non-licensed personnel in the provision of care as assigned.
This role offers the opportunity to function as a role model for current and new staff, creating a healthy work environment to help the unit meet its goals. The nurse also provides ongoing education to patients and families, and remains current on evidence-based practice and appropriate protocols.
Requirements
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Ability to assess suicide risk and implement appropriate interventions.
- Experience de-escalating patients in crisis to prevent acts of aggression.
- Demonstrated critical thinking and clinical judgment skills.
- Ability to direct and delegate to other licensed and non-licensed personnel.
- Effective communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice and ability to remain current on protocols.
Responsibilities

- Continually assess patient and family needs to provide quality care based on a patient centered care model.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills and judgment necessary to implement a patient plan of care, nursing interventions, and procedures.
- Maintain accurate and real time documentation of nursing care provided according to hospital policy.
- Function as a role model for current and new staff by creating a healthy work environment to facilitate department goals.
- Direct other licensed and non-licensed personnel in the provision of care to patients as assigned.
- Assess and reassess suicide risk per policy, utilizing appropriate tools, and adapt the plan of care with interventions; de-escalate patients in crisis.
