University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Staff Nurse (RN) for the Neuropsychiatric Unit. This role involves assessing patients' nursing care needs, evaluating effectiveness of care, and integrating nursing theory and research into clinical practice.

Characteristic duties include applying nursing theory to assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses. Staff nurses assess patient health care preferences, collaboratively coordinate the continuum of care, and develop individualized care plans based on condition, age, and psychosocial factors.

The neuropsychiatric unit offers a specialized setting for caring for patients with complex neurological and psychiatric conditions within a multidisciplinary team environment.

This position offers a sign-on incentive of up to $12,500 based on experience, along with shift differentials for evening, night, and weekend shifts. Premium pay is available for additional shifts greater than 4 hours, and the SEIU pay plan provides structured compensation.

Requirements

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Iowa.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Ability to assess patient health care needs and evaluate effectiveness of care.
  • Knowledge of nursing theory and its application to clinical practice.
  • Experience in psychiatric or neuropsychiatric nursing preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work evening shifts (8 hours) with alternating weekends and holidays.
  • Strong collaborative skills for multidisciplinary team coordination.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records and documentation standards.

Responsibilities

  • Apply nursing theory to assess, diagnose, treat, and evaluate patient responses to health and illness.
  • Assess patient health care preferences and expectations.
  • Collaboratively coordinate the continuum of care across settings.
  • Develop patient care plans based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions.
  • Implement patient care plans according to patient priorities, including interventions identified through nursing diagnoses.
  • Document and report interventions and patient/family response.
  • Collaborate and integrate contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plans.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement transfer/discharge planning throughout the episode of care.
