About this role
Children's Mercy is seeking a Staff Nurse for our Developmental and Behavioral Medicine Clinic, a phone-based role focused on providing mental and developmental illness management and health promotion for patients and families. This position requires an experienced phone triage nurse with superior communication skills and the ability to remain calm during stressful conversations.
In this role, you will utilize the nursing process to develop and implement safe, high-quality, comprehensive, and age-appropriate plans of care for patients and families. You will handle provider and parent requests received via telephone or message center, using critical thinking to determine issues within the first few sentences of a conversation and provide teaching for self-care and symptom management.

Requirements
- Experience in phone triage nursing.
- Superior verbal communication skills.
- Keyboarding and computer skills to dictate information from calls to the medical record.
- Ability to remain calm during stressful conversations.
- Critical thinking skills to determine the issue or situation within the first few sentences of a conversation.
- Strong assessment skills and crisis intervention skills.
- Teaching ability through telephone conversation.
Responsibilities
- Utilize the nursing process to develop and implement a safe, high quality, comprehensive, and age-appropriate plan of care for the patient and family that promotes optimal patient outcomes.
- Meet the educational needs of the patient and family and advocate for their needs.
- Maintain an environment that is safe, comfortable, efficient, and family-centered.
- Utilize current research and evidence for practice to expand personal professional knowledge and enhance role performance.
- Handle prior authorization requests and general provider and parent requests received via telephone or message center contact.
- Perform phone triage nursing, using critical thinking skills to determine the issue or situation within the first few sentences of a conversation.
- Provide teaching through telephone conversation, instructing patients for self-care and/or symptom management.
