University of Iowa Health Care, a top-ranked academic medical center, is seeking a Staff Nurse for the Mother Baby Care Unit. This 17-bed unit on 6JPP cares for antepartum and postpartum patients needing specialized monitoring and recovery.

Qualified candidates are eligible for a sign-on bonus up to $10,000. Staff nurses apply nursing theory to assess, diagnose, treat, and evaluate patient responses while developing individualized care plans based on patient conditions and preferences.

Care is coordinated across settings, integrating contributions from patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams. The unit provides support services such as lactation visits, circumcisions, social work consults, and hearing testing for newborns, while electronic infant security enhances patient safety.

This role offers the opportunity to work in a comprehensive academic medical center dedicated to changing medicine and changing lives. Evening shifts Monday through Friday with no weekends and holidays as assigned provide a stable schedule.

Requirements

  • Current Iowa Registered Nurse license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
  • Experience caring for antepartum and postpartum patients in a hospital setting.
  • Knowledge of electronic fetal monitoring and interpretation.
  • Ability to perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized care plans.

Responsibilities

  • Apply nursing theory to assess, diagnose, treat, and evaluate patient responses to health and illness.
  • Assess patient health care preferences and expectations.
  • Collaboratively coordinate the continuum of care across settings.
  • Develop patient care plans based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions.
  • Implement patient care plans according to priorities, including interventions identified through nursing diagnoses; document and report interventions and patient/family response.
  • Collaborate and integrate contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plans.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement transfer/discharge planning throughout the episode of care.
  • Implement nursing interventions according to policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain a safe environment; follow universal precautions.
