About this role
The Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UAB St. Vincent's Birmingham is a 32-bed open bay unit providing advanced treatment for the smallest and most vulnerable patients. The team cares for infants with complications including prematurity, respiratory distress, neonatal sepsis, neonatal abstinence syndrome, and birth injuries.
In this part-time role, you will collaborate with board-certified neonatologists to diagnose and treat acute and chronic health conditions in neonates. Daily responsibilities include obtaining patient histories, performing assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies, and providing direct treatment and management of health conditions.
You will work alongside a dedicated team of experienced neonatal nurse practitioners and neonatologists, closely coordinating with the UAB Women & Infants Center and Children's of Alabama. The unit offers a compassionate environment where empathy, parental education, and family support are central to the care model.

Requirements
- Master's degree of Nursing required.
- Certified Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner credentialed from the Alabama Board of Nursing obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required.
- BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
- Drug Enforcement Admin credentialed from the Drug Enforcement Administration preferred.
- Experience in a Level III NICU setting preferred.
- Ability to diagnose and treat acute and chronic health conditions in neonates.
Responsibilities
- Obtain patient history and perform assessments via observation, interview, and examination.
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic studies.
- Perform preventative health assessments, screening, immunizations, and patient care.
- Provide direct treatment and management of health conditions via prescriptive authority or referral to other healthcare providers or community resources.
- Counsel and educate patients and their families/caregivers concerning preventative health, treatment options, and community resources.
- Document delivery of health care and nursing processes in accordance with specific specialty area standards and network nursing policy.
- Collaborate with a physician to expand individualized primary healthcare services for neonates.
