The Department of Pediatrics, Section of Critical Care Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a full-time Instructor faculty for the position of pediatric acute care nurse practitioner. This offers a unique experience in high-volume pediatric intensive care units. Texas Children's Hospital comprises 162 intensive care beds across three campuses, with the primary site at Medical Center Campus in Houston.

The Medical Center PICU is an 84-bed unit including Surgical ICU, Neurological ICU, Pulmonary ICU, Hematology/Oncology ICU, and Transitional ICU. The Instructor works alongside faculty colleagues, critical care physician fellows, advanced practice providers, consultants, and pediatric residents. They provide care for children with chronic and acute illness requiring intensive care in PICU and TICU.

PICU has over 2500 admissions per year, more than half requiring assisted ventilation or advanced support such as oscillatory ventilation, nitric oxide, ECMO, extra-corporeal liver support, and CRRT. TICU also has more than 2500 admissions yearly, designed for long-term technology support, residual PICU morbidities transitioning to home, and intensive medical management.

This role supports pursuit of a career in pediatric intensive care at one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the United States. Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under physician direction. Involves participation in education, on-call, and section activities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Nursing
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing
  • Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP)
  • Specialty certification as required by department
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification

Responsibilities

  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations
  • Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments
  • Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts
  • Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols
  • Supervise Fellows
  • Participate in on-call schedule for the pediatric intensive care unit
  • Play active role in education of trainees and participation in CCM Section activities
