About this role
The Registered Nurse (RN) utilizes the nursing process to coordinate the interdisciplinary approach to patient care. He/she provides safe, therapeutic care in a holistic and systematic way. Integrates knowledge, skills and experiences to meet the needs of patients and families through the continuum of care.
Performs comprehensive assessments to provide effective patient care for neonates in the NICU. Develops, implements and evaluates plan of care recognizing changes in the patient's condition. Provides direct nursing care including supportive care, fluid and electrolyte replacements as prescribed.
Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team, patient and family to integrate assessment and input. Delegates appropriately according to task and functions as an independent team member. Takes a leadership role in building and maintaining an environment where all team members thrive.
Demonstrates leadership skills in decision-making and problem solving. Assumes responsibility for self-development in life-long learning and serves as a resource, preceptor, and mentor. Seeks out additional learning experiences such as unit specific certifications and consultation with experts.
Requirements
- Practices within the boundaries of the Kansas Nurse Practice Act, specialty standards and organizational/departmental policies and procedures
- Integrates and communicates knowledge and sensitivity to patient's psychosocial, spiritual, cultural and age specific needs
- Independently performs a comprehensive assessment to provide the most effective patient care for a given population
- Utilizes technology correctly for functions related to patient care delivery, mandatory programs/competencies and policies/procedures
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department
- Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Experience in neonatal intensive care preferred
Responsibilities
- Adheres to hospital policies related to medication safety, including order writing format, correct administration considerations, and double checks
- Answers patient/significant others phone calls, evaluates patient's needs, and triages patient care
- Anticipates and intervenes in an appropriate and timely manner when there are concerns related to patient and staff safety
- Demonstrates critical thinking utilizing all aspects of the nursing process
- Performs nursing assessments and triage of patient care needs for new and ongoing patients
- Provides direct nursing care for specified patients, including appropriate supportive care and administration of blood components, fluid and electrolyte replacements
- Provides patient/family education using resources available
- Coordinates health care services with hospital, vendors, physician's offices and other institutions
