About this role

The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) is a vital member of the Occupational Health and Safety team, working collaboratively to provide a safe working environment for employees in Mental Health and Addictions. Under the direction of the Clinical Lead, the OHN assists with designing, delivering, maintaining, and evaluating a prevention-oriented occupational and environmental health and safety program.

Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting health examinations, assessing the work environment, providing prevention strategies, and delivering health education and promotion programs. The OHN also manages data collection systems, performs health surveillance, and coordinates follow-up for work-related injuries or illnesses.

Working independently and in collaboration with workers, employers, unions, and other health professionals, the OHN advocates for workers to promote health in a safe environment. The role involves counseling interventions, return-to-work planning, and monitoring occupational illness and injury trends.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a specialized occupational health program within a multidisciplinary mental health setting. It is a full-time, day-shift role with a structured unionized environment and defined salary progression under the Manitoba Nurses Union.

Requirements

  • 5 years of nursing experience including 3 years in Occupational Health Nursing
  • Experience in community health, ambulatory care, critical care, or emergency nursing preferred
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM)
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety principles, legislation, and best practices
  • Ability to conduct comprehensive health assessments and clinical evaluations
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
  • Effective interpersonal and advocacy skills for working with diverse stakeholders

Responsibilities

  • Conduct health examinations and assess the work environment for hazards
  • Provide prevention strategies and health education and promotion programs
  • Manage data collection and information systems for occupational health
  • Perform health surveillance and follow-up on work-related injuries and illnesses
  • Participate in return-to-work planning and monitor occupational illness/injury trends
  • Develop education and wellness programs addressing non-occupational illness trends
  • Assist with program planning, coordination, delivery, policy development, and cost-containment strategies
