About this role

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, assists with patients’ activities of daily living and plan of care in Cooper University’s 35-bed level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Looking for individuals willing and with experience in stocking, clerical/administrative tasks, and cleaning of NICU specific equipment. Communicates with and supports healthcare team, patients, and/or patient’s family or significant other(s).

Supports activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting/hygiene, and assisting with mobility and transport. Performs technical duties as directed by RN such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, and Foley catheter care specific to population served. Identifies and communicates changes in patient’s status to RN and responds appropriately.

The NICU is set up in smaller pods holding up to 4 infants, except Transitional nursery up to 12 preparing for discharge. Cares for infants as young as 23 weeks gestation requiring surgical interventions, respiratory support up to high frequency ventilation and nitric oxide. Features Neonatal transport team, all Registered RN’s, physicians, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Residents, dedicated Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, Unit secretaries, and Child Life Personnel.

Maintains high standards of professional ethics and participates in patient satisfaction initiatives and performance improvement activities. Assists in orientation of new hires and completes annual unit-specific competencies. Opportunities for career growth through professional development at Cooper University Health Care.

Requirements

  • 0-2 years of experience preferred
  • Successful completion of an unlicensed health care provider/technician program
  • Completed at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited Nursing Program
  • 1 year or more patient care experience
  • Experience in stocking, clerical/administrative, cleaning of NICU specific equipment
  • Demonstrates standard precautions including the care of patients in isolation and safe patient practice
  • High School / GED

Responsibilities

  • Supports the activities of daily living to include bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting/hygiene, and assisting with mobility and transport
  • Performs technical duties as directed by RN, such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, Foley catheter care specific to population served and documents appropriately
  • Identifies and communicates changes in patient’s status to RN and responds appropriately
  • Reinforces education of patient and family/responsible party regarding individual care needs and safety issues
  • Participates in Cooper patient satisfaction initiatives and goals and in performance improvement activities
  • Assists in orientation of new hires
  • Completes annual unit-specific competencies by specified due date
  • Assists in admission, transfers and discharges of patients to and from the unit
