At Cooper University Health Care, our commitment to providing extraordinary health care begins with our team. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the Nurse Associate Unit Secretary assists with patients’ activities of daily living and plan of care in our 35-bed level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This role supports infants as young as 23 weeks gestation requiring surgical interventions and respiratory support.
Individuals with experience in stocking, clerical/administrative duties, and cleaning of NICU specific equipment are sought. Daily tasks include supporting bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting, mobility, and transport while demonstrating standard precautions. Technical duties encompass phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, and Foley catheter care, with appropriate documentation.
The NICU features smaller pods for up to 4 infants and a transitional nursery for 12 preparing for discharge. The team includes Registered RNs, attending physicians, fellows, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Residents, dedicated Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, Unit secretaries, and Child Life Personnel. A Neonatal transport team retrieves infants needing higher level care from South Jersey hospitals.
Reinforce education for patients and families on care needs and safety. Participate in patient satisfaction initiatives, performance improvement activities, and orientation of new hires. Opportunities exist for career growth through professional development in this dynamic environment.
Requirements
- High school/GED required
- Successful completion of an unlicensed health care provider/technician program
- Completed at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited Nursing Program
- 1 year or more patient care experience in a similar role
- 0-2 years preferred
- Demonstrates high standards of professional ethics
- Communicates with and supports healthcare team, patients and/or patient’s family or significant other(s)
Responsibilities
- Supports the activities of daily living to include bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting/hygiene, and assisting with mobility and transport
- Performs technical duties as directed by RN, such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, Foley catheter care specific to population served and documents appropriately
- Identifies and communicates changes in patient’s status to RN and responds appropriately
- Reinforces education of patient and family/responsible party regarding individual care needs and safety issues
- Assists in admission, transfers and discharges of patients to and from the unit
- Stocks, performs clerical/administrative duties, and cleans NICU specific equipment
- Participates in Cooper patient satisfaction initiatives and performance improvement activities
- Completes annual unit-specific competencies by specified due date
