About this role

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware is a 24-bed unit in a Level 1 Trauma Center. It provides care to the sickest pediatric patients with conditions including respiratory failure, cardiovascular dysfunction, hepatic failure, and organ failure requiring transplantation.

Treatments in the PICU utilize advanced life support technology such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, tracheal intubation, ECMO, mechanical ventilation, CRRT, and hemodynamic monitoring. Each patient room features electrocardiographic, pulse oximetry, respiratory, and intracranial pressure monitoring capabilities.

Special equipment includes radiant warmer beds, ventilators, infusion pumps, continuous renal replacement systems, and intracranial pressure monitoring systems. Portable monitoring supports patient transport. The department delivers patient care, conducts research, and educates health care professionals.

The PICU Nursing Residency is a rigorous 6-month precepted program with didactic and clinical experience, followed by 6 months of didactic support. Selected candidates start as PICU Nurse Externs working one-on-one with bedside nurses before transitioning to Nurse Resident in August.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher (transcript required at time of interview)
  • Previous externship or experience in a healthcare environment preferred
  • BLS certification with the American Heart Association
  • Delaware or Multistate Compact RN License by 8/10/26

Responsibilities

  • Assesses and documents initial and ongoing needs for children with complex medical and surgical needs.
  • Utilizes critical thinking to formulate nursing plan based on patients' complex needs and problems.
  • Develops realistic and appropriate long- and short-term goals based on patient/family needs.
  • Implements patient plan of care for patients and family with both critical and complex needs.
  • Evaluates the patient's and family's response to care and modifies care plan accordingly.
  • Assists patients and families in discharge planning so that problems and care needs are anticipated and met.
  • Serves as an advocate for patients and families in working with other members of the health care team.
  • Provides safe and appropriate nursing care through adherence to Nursing Department standards.
