About this role

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the Nurse Associate Unit Secretary assists with patients’ activities of daily living and plan of care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This role involves stocking, clerical/administrative tasks, and cleaning of NICU specific equipment. Communicates with healthcare team, patients, and families while maintaining high standards of professional ethics.

Supports activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting, and mobility assistance. Performs technical duties like phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, and Foley catheter care, documenting appropriately. Identifies and communicates changes in patient status to RN, demonstrating standard precautions and safe practices.

Cooper University’s 35-bed level 3 NICU features smaller pods for up to 4 infants, with a transitional nursery for 12. Cares for infants from 23 weeks gestation needing surgical interventions, respiratory support up to high frequency ventilation and nitric oxide. Includes Neonatal transport team and ancillary staff like Respiratory, Occupational, Physical, Speech Therapists, Unit secretaries, and Child Life personnel.

Participates in patient satisfaction initiatives, performance improvement, and new hire orientation. Completes annual unit-specific competencies and reviews staff meeting minutes. Assists in admissions, transfers, and discharges while reinforcing education on care needs and safety.

Requirements

  • High School / GED
  • Successful completion of an unlicensed health care provider/technician program
  • Completed at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited RN Program
  • 1 year or more patient care experience in a similar role
  • 0-2 years of experience preferred
  • Experience in stocking, clerical/administrative tasks, and cleaning of NICU specific equipment
  • Demonstrates standard precautions including care of patients in isolation and safe patient practice

Responsibilities

  • Supports activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting/hygiene, and assisting with mobility and transport
  • Performs technical duties directed by RN such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, and Foley catheter care specific to population served
  • Identifies and communicates changes in patient’s status to RN and responds appropriately
  • Reinforces education of patient and family regarding individual care needs and safety issues
  • Participates in patient satisfaction initiatives, performance improvement activities, and assists in orientation of new hires
  • Completes annual unit-specific competencies by specified due date
  • Assists in admission, transfers, and discharges of patients to and from the unit
  • Stocks, performs clerical/administrative tasks, and cleans NICU specific equipment
