About this role

Regarded as clinical expert and role model in application of the nursing process and evidence-based practice to manage complex care needs of specific patient populations. Serves as a resource person to physicians, nurses, patients, and family members. Applies principles of adult learning to plan and conduct educational sessions promoting staff development and positive outcomes.

Plans and conducts educational sessions to promote staff development, student competence, and positive patient/family outcomes. Demonstrates proficiency in teaching and precepting skills while facilitating development of unit preceptors. Coordinates unit-based clinical orientation program for new staff, students, and preceptors, individualizing orientations as needed.

Role models expert communication skills to colleagues through example and demonstrates foresight regarding nursing care impact on patient outcomes. Assumes staff level leadership and resource role with the interdisciplinary team. Ensures compliance with policies, contributes to resource evaluation, and maintains confidential information.

Assists with annual educational needs assessment and development of competency checklists. Mentors staff by sharing knowledge, skills, and processes while integrating patient/family education into staff development. Supports clinical leadership and critical thinking skills in others within a supportive environment.

Requirements

  • Clinical expert and role model in nursing process and evidence-based practice for complex cardiovascular ICU patient care
  • Proficiency in principles of adult learning for staff and student education
  • Expert communication skills demonstrated to colleagues
  • Experience precepting and developing unit preceptors
  • Foresight on impact of nursing care on patient outcomes based on intuition and experience
  • Ability to conduct educational needs assessments and develop competency checklists
  • Leadership in interdisciplinary team and resource role for optimal patient outcomes

Responsibilities

  • Applies principles of adult learning to plan and conduct educational sessions to promote staff development, student competence, and positive patient/family outcomes

  • Coordinates unit based clinical orientation program for new staff, students and preceptors
  • Facilitates development of unit preceptors including effective delegation and interpersonal skills
  • Assists with the development of staff portfolios and annual competency checklists
  • Mentors new and existing staff by sharing knowledge, skills and departmental processes
  • Role models time management skills through example and ensures compliance with policies
  • Integrates patient/family education activities into unit based staff development programs
