About this role

Regarded as clinical expert and role model in application of the nursing process and evidence-based practice to manage the complex care needs of specific patient populations. Serves as a resource person to physicians, nurses, patients, and family members. Applies principles of adult learning to plan and conduct educational sessions to promote staff development, student competence, and positive patient/family outcomes.

Demonstrates proficiency in teaching and precepting skills while facilitating development of unit preceptors including effective delegation and interpersonal skills. Coordinates unit based clinical orientation program for new staff, students and preceptors, individualizing orientations with preceptors. Assists with development of staff portfolios, annual educational needs assessment, and competency checklists.

Role models expert communication skills to colleagues through example and demonstrates foresight regarding the impact of nursing care on patient outcomes based on intuition and experience. Provides and coordinates resources needed within the unit to provide optimal patient outcomes. Assumes a staff level leadership and resource role with the interdisciplinary team.

Integrates patient/family education activities into unit based staff development and continuing education programs under direction of the CNS and Unit Director. Mentors new and existing staff by sharing knowledge, skills and departmental processes. Assists with development of clinical leadership and critical thinking skills in others.

Requirements

  • Clinical expert in application of nursing process and evidence-based practice for complex cardiovascular ICU patient populations
  • Proficiency in teaching, precepting, and adult learning principles
  • Expert clinician and leader within cardiovascular ICU specialty
  • Ability to role model communication skills and foresight on nursing care impacts
  • Knowledge of operational forms revision and resource coordination for optimal patient outcomes
  • Skills in developing clinical leadership and critical thinking in staff
  • Experience facilitating preceptor development and individualized orientations
