About this role
Under the leadership of the department director, assistant director, nursing supervisor, and/or charge nurse, the registered nurse is responsible and accountable for planning, directing, assessing and providing nursing care according to hospital and department policies. Important dimensions include quality of care, professional commitment, teamwork, interpersonal skills, safety, good public relations and broad nursing knowledge. The registered nurse is an experienced nurse who orients new staff, precepts students, and assumes relief charge nurse duty.
The RN possesses skills to competently evaluate, plan, and implement appropriate nursing care of patients, provide prescribed medication and treatment, assist physicians during treatment, and monitor and record patient condition while notifying physician when appropriate. In the IICN, the staff RN provides well-baby, nursery, IICN level 1 and 2 care, attends deliveries, initiates resuscitation as needed, and maintains skills to stabilize for transfer to tertiary levels of care. The staff RN floats to FBC to provide postpartum maternal and infant care.

The position requires passing orientation and initial competency assessment prior to independent assignment, with ongoing annual competencies. Experienced nurses contribute to staff development through orientation and precepting. Opportunities exist to expand skills in a level II nursery setting.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of acute care hospital experience in a level II or higher level nursery or successful completion of a NICU training program
- Knowledge of well newborn care, newborn delivery admission, resuscitation, and maternal postpartum care
- State of California RN license required
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS and NRP Advanced Provider required
- STABLE required for hires after April 1, 2025; current staff by September 1, 2026
- PALS and ENPC preferred
- Pass orientation and initial competency assessment prior to independent patient assignment
- Complete and pass all annual competencies
