About this role
The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu (AKHK), part of Aga Khan Health Services, Kenya and the Aga Khan Development Network, seeks locum NICU Nurses. Reporting to the Manager – Paediatrics Services, provide specialized nursing care to newborns requiring intensive monitoring, including premature infants, low birth weight babies, and those with complications. AKHK is in an exciting growth phase with ISO 9001:2015 certification and other accreditations.
Deliver holistic, evidence-based nursing care to neonates in the NICU while monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and managing feeds including NG/OG/IV. Assist in neonatal resuscitation, participate in emergency interventions, and provide Kangaroo Mother Care support. Maintain accurate records and uphold infection prevention practices per hospital policy.
Collaborate with paediatricians, neonatologists, midwives, and multidisciplinary teams for optimal patient outcomes. Support family-centred care by counselling mothers and guardians on breastfeeding, routine newborn care, and discharge planning. Work across a network including outreach health facilities in Eastern Africa.
Operate in a fast-paced environment within a hospital pursuing Joint Commission International Accreditation. Engage in continuous professional development, quality improvement initiatives, and audits. Contribute to newborn health and family-centred care in a certified, expanding institution.
Requirements
- Diploma in KRCHN or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized institution
- Higher Diploma in Neonatal Nursing/NICU
- At least two (2) years’ experience working as a NICU nurse
- Active Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) license
- Valid BLS certification preferred
- Strong communication, critical thinking, and compassionate care skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond effectively to emergencies
- A passion for newborn health, family-centred care, and continuous learning
Responsibilities
