About this role

At Cooper University Health Care’s 35-bed level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Nurse Associate Unit Secretary works under RN direction to assist with infants’ activities of daily living. The unit features smaller pods for up to 4 infants and a transitional nursery for up to 12 preparing for discharge. It cares for infants from 23 weeks gestation needing surgical interventions and respiratory support including high frequency ventilation and nitric oxide.

Daily tasks include stocking, clerical/administrative duties, and cleaning NICU-specific equipment. Support activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, toileting, and mobility. Perform technical duties like phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, and Foley catheter care while documenting appropriately.

The NICU team consists of all Registered RNs, attending physicians, fellows, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Residents, and a robust ancillary team. Ancillary staff includes dedicated Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists for feeding issues, Unit secretaries, and Child Life Personnel. A Neonatal transport team retrieves infants needing higher level care from South Jersey hospitals.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an unlicensed health care provider/ technician program
  • Completed at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited Nursing Program
  • Experience in stocking, clerical/administrative, cleaning of NICU specific equipment
  • High School / GED
  • 0-2 years of experience preferred
  • 1 year or more patient care experience
  • Demonstrates standard precautions including the care of patients in isolation and safe patient practice
  • Maintains and demonstrates high standards of professional ethics

Responsibilities

  • Supports the activities of daily living to include bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting/hygiene, and assisting with mobility and transport
  • Performs technical duties as directed by RN, such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, Foley catheter care specific to population served and documents appropriately
  • Identifies and communicates changes in patient’s status to RN and responds appropriately
  • Reinforces education of patient and family/responsible party regarding individual care needs and safety issues
  • Assists in admission, transfers and discharges of patients to and from the unit
  • Stocking, clerical/administrative, cleaning of NICU specific equipment
  • Participates in Cooper patient satisfaction initiatives and goals
  • Completes annual unit-specific competencies by specified due date
